Witness

Monday. I find the remains
of a hedgehog and the brick
that pounded it. Tuesday.
My neighbour is chasing
the blind black cat
from our garden: running it
headfirst into a wall,
then a tree. Wednesday.
The farmhand lays down
poison for the eagle
which took a hen. Thursday.
The boy at the Balaton
slowly crushes ladybirds
with a fingernail, bagging
all the bodies. He snatches
