N.S. Thompson Poem
Messiaen: Quartet for the End of Time

First performance:
Stalag VIII-A, Görlitz (now Zgorzelec, Poland)
January 15, 1941

               i.m. Geoffrey Hill

Wind soughs; rain soaks the ill-constructed camp
                       Whose wooden stamp
Is rigid with the staves and barbs of wire
On which his semi-quavers dance.

It is the end of time. The fall of France.
                       But notes enhance
Men captured for the audience. Why are
Heads shaking, unbelieving, in the cold and damp?
