Reading Biography

Riffling through the final chapters                 
the book grows heavy,
the weight of other lives leans on me,
they whisper with my own ghosts
and I tire of the conscientious spade
unearthing tangles in lucid prose.

Man of Destiny; the great leader
lies exhumed, famous ladies’ man,
serial seducer who put down the Lords.
He flames through his time,
his women sitting it out;

primary sources, painstakingly sifted,
document the ambiguities
of their patience and passion,
his children’s devotion and rage
